Abstract

The issue of land disputes and the struggle for land ownership in Mozambique has deep roots, spanning centuries and crossing different historical stages, from the pre-colonial period to the post-independence era. After Mozambique's independence in 1975, the government sought to end previously existing land access systems. Having failed in this project, what can be observed is the coexistence of different forms of access, which creates a situation of significant disputes over land. This overlapping of interests, on the one hand, capitalist and on the other, community, is at the origin of the dispute over land. There are several factors behind these disputes, but it is worth mentioning a few: (i) failure to implement the Land Law, especially community consultations, (ii) invasion of community territories and (iii) unfulfilled promises by mining companies.
