Abstract

Agroforestry Systems (AFSs) comprise a diverse set of land-use practices characterized by the integration of tree species, agricultural crops, and, in some cases, livestock components, presenting different structures, compositions, spatial arrangements, and management practices. This article discusses the contribution of AFSs to understanding the relationships between society and nature and to strengthening geographic education within the school context. The objective was to analyze the educational potential of agroforestry systems in promoting environmental awareness and fostering knowledge related to sustainable soil use through activities developed within the Sustainable Agriculture Orchard Project (POMAGRIS) at a municipal public school in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The methodology consisted of a literature review on agroforestry systems, soil conservation, and environmental education, combined with a case study conducted within the framework of the POMAGRIS project. The activities included educational lectures on the importance of soil and its conservation, the planting of tree and fruit seedlings, and the implementation of green manure practices aimed at raising students’ awareness of sustainable soil management and soil quality restoration. These actions were carried out with basic education students, integrating scientific knowledge and pedagogical practices focused on understanding the interactions between natural elements and human activities. We argue that agroforestry systems should be understood through the relationships between society and nature and their capacity to meet human needs in a sustainable manner. In this sense, the activities developed contributed to students’ geographic education by addressing environmental, social, and scientific dimensions related to land use. We conclude by highlighting the relevance of AFSs as an educational tool in basic education, fostering closer collaboration between universities and schools and promoting the development of individuals who are more aware of soil conservation and environmental sustainability.
