CAPOEIRA AND THE SPORTS PHENOMENON:

A HISTORICAL CULTURAL DIALOGUE.

Abstract

This research aims to reflect on the roles historically and culturally building by Capoeira and its process of dialogue with the phenomenon of sport. It is a qualitative approach based on a literature review in the light of sport sociology. Discussions of sport were configured in two contexts: high performance and sport as a leisure activity. Capoeira is linked to sport in an attempt to eliminate the marginalized profile, establish a nationalist perspective and social control. It is observed that the values inserted into capoeira throughout its cultural trajectory respond contrary to the attempt at homogenization and bodily alienation in its popular practice.
