Abstract

Sports refereeing is a complex activity that integrates cognitive, physical, emotional, and social skills in the management of competitions. Although scientific production has grown in recent decades, the literature still presents fragmented approaches that analyze isolated dimensions of refereeing performance. In this context, it is essential to discuss conceptual models capable of integrating these dimensions and guiding training programs. This theoretical essay critically discusses the evolution of the literature, analyzes key competencies, and argues that holistic approaches are promising for referee development. The Game Management Framework for Sports Refereeing (GMFSR) is mobilized as an integrative reference.
