Three moments in the production of knowledge about violence and femicides against girls and women in San Luis Potosí, Mexico

Abstract

In the present work, we analyze three moments in the production of knowledge and local data on violence against women. The first, conducted in 2014, was a pioneering diagnostic study on the capacities of institutions to understand, detect, address, and punish sexual violence, carried out by COLSAN, UNFA, and the State Population Council of San Luis Potosí through interviews and focus groups. The second consists of a strategic study conducted in 2015 by the State Human Rights Commission of San Luis Potosí to support a request for the declaration of a Gender Violence Alert against Women, aimed at responding to the growing wave of feminicides in the state. The third study, carried out by COLSAN and CONAVIM in 20 municipalities with records of feminicides, using mixed methodologies between 2018 and 2019 and involving academics and feminist advocates, is the broadest one, considered a component of the AVGM mechanism for measuring the various forms of violence against girls and women between 15 and 49 years of age.
