REINVENTING PLASTIC STRAWS’ USE FROM DIGITAL ACTIVISM AND THE LEGAL-LEGISLATIVE IMPACT IN THE BRAZILIAN CONTEXT

Abstract

Social movements have such an antique origin; however, internet modified the way citizens manifest themselves por changes, increasing a collective resentment in a global level and adding a new type of activism: the cyber one. Those online manifestations approach several subjects, and one of the most recent questions that appeared on social media, attached to the environmental movement, is the manifestation for sustainable straws. Nevertheless, what is the juridical-legislative impact of cyber activisms that search for the use of biodegradable straws? To answer the research problem, it’s used the deductive method to the approach and the monographic and statistical methods to the procedure, after bibliographical and documental revision. The first chapter is responsible for approaching the cyber activisms and the newest social movements, as well as the environmental movement, as well as the second section constrict the following study towards the manifestations for biodegradable straws and the juridical-legislative impact caused in Brazilian’s scenario. It’s possible to conclude that cyber activisms for sustainable straws caused positive effects on levels of legislation in Brazil, considering that, from 23 states analyzed, every one of them already have cities prohibiting to sell of plastic straws and 7 of them count with prohibitive law to the entire territory. This wave of restraining the use of plastic straws created an awareness movement on a national level, that made emerge discussions about other products that cause damage towards the environment.
