Ernst Robert Curtius and The German Spirit in Danger

Deutscher Geist in Gefahr [The German Spirit in Danger], by Ernst Robert Curtius, was published in 1932, when the turbulent Weimar Republic was heading towards its dissolution. Curtius, as a member of the German educated bourgeoise, sought to defend and restore the social funcion of the concepto of Bildung and its humanista heritage in maintaining German culture. In Curtius perspective, the reconstruction of Bildung could provide solutions for the German situation during the Weimar Republic. Deutsch Geist in Gefahr is the main thema of this article, which is divided into two interconnected parts: in the first, I introduce the German concept of Bildung, and its social and indentity impliclations related to the educate bourgeoisie and German identity. In the second part, I analyze Curtius‘ book in order to connect it to the previous section and present its theoretical and conceptual construct, emphasizing the relations established by Curtius between Bildung, Kultur and humanism.
