Our Augustinian Attitude about Theory of History

That “theory of history” is a well-established research field in Brazil is a widespread assumption – one that I will argue is wrong. But the reason this assumption is incorrect is not empirical, but rather conceptual: there seems to be no good definition for the phrase “theory of history”. It is thus impossible to assess the current state of the field, since no one really knows its scope. This difficulty with definitions is what I call “our Augustinian attitude” about theory of history. To develop this argument, I will explore the semantic and organizational aspects of the issue and then note some inconveniences that may arise from this situation.
