Renascença Clube and the empowerment of Black women: a critical perspective on ethnic-racial relations

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the place of Black women in the discursive practices of Renascença Clube, considered the first Black club in the city of Rio de Janeiro. In other words, it aims to understand how the club participates in activities and services for the empowerment of Black women who frequent the club, actions implied in discourses that have virtues and ambiguities. The research method, based on Action Research, allowed us to problematize the projects that are currently being developed, through criticism of their evident contradictions, both from a historical perspective and from an ethnic-racial and gender perspective. And what was found is that the club’s practices, such as beauty contests and projects developed focused on mental health, although positive in their premise, still reveal a plot that can re-actualize certain categories of control over the authentic protagonism of Black women.
