Abstract

Objectives: to analyze patients’ perceptions of interdisciplinary educational activities on “Intestinal Ostomy Management” during the perioperative period of intestinal cancer surgeries. Methods: a cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted at a public hospital specialized in cancer treatment in São Paulo, Brazil. Data were collected through telephone interviews, guided by a structured form that assessed patients’ perceptions of the guidance offered by the interdisciplinary team on “Intestinal Ostomy Management” during the perioperative period. Results: twenty-two patients participated. Most agreed that educational activities in the perioperative period, including preparation in the outpatient setting, preparation/support during hospitalization, and preparation for discharge, were relevant for understanding the surgical procedure, providing emotional support, recognizing postoperative complications, caring of drains and dressings, managing the ostomy and collection equipment, as well as nutritional care for ostomates. The participation of family members/caregivers during educational actions was perceived as important, both pre- and postoperatively, as a facilitator of self-care. Conclusion: interdisciplinary educational activities in the perioperative period of intestinal cancer surgeries with resulting stomas are perceived as relevant for understanding treatment and promoting self-care. The participation of family members/caregivers is considered important in this process.
