This article analyzes the development of Chilean rap in the 21st century based on a corpus of “promotional” from self-organized rap festivals. We understand the promotional as extended musical pieces featuring a multitude of voices, created with the initial purpose of inviting audiences to participate in the events they advertise. However, we maintain that their function far transcends the promotional dimension: these musical productions have become highly relevant cultural objects within the Chilean rap scene both for the sonic aesthetics they employ, and for the topics they address. These compositions articulate narratives at the level of their lyrics, delving into the imaginaries, values, and sensibilities of Chilean hiphoppas, projecting a literary density that complicates the conventional understanding of this musical genre. From this perspective, we propose that the study of “promotional” videos constitutes a privileged way to understand the recent development of rap in Chile, as it allows us to observe processes of artistic creation that have been scarcely explored by the specialized literature.
