The evolution of music education and artificial intelligence (AI) with the introduction of new applications, uses, and resources is transforming and expanding the ways and opportunities for teaching and learning. Researchers, music educators, programmers, and software developers are integrating AI tools to improve educational practices at all levels and contexts. The aim of the study is to analyze the scope and evidence of the use and application of AI in music education. This paper presents an exploratory review of 69 peer-reviewed and indexed studies presented in a PRISMA flow chart. The paper organizes the information into a system of study categories: autonomous learning, assisted learning, generative learning, and evaluative learning. The results obtained require critical reflection on the contribution of AI to music education as a resource that coexists with, supports, and enriches the human and artistic essence of the educational and creative musical experience. The study provides a knowledge base that can guide educators and researchers in advancing and integrating AI approaches into music education practice.
